Burnett's Ladder Plan

We all know how frustrating it is when our core medicine that we have spent hours finding does nothing.
Hence, I am a big fan of finding other tools and resources within the homoeopathic spectrum to improve my chances of success.
Over the years some of the most successful approaches to unlock my challenging cases came from looking at tools within Stage 1.

And my favourite here is Compton Burnett!

I find it really amusing as I say this because my introduction to Compton Burnett has been very recent - when I was invited to teach his approach for the very first time 8 years ago. I looked at his name in the list of topics and I had absolutely no clue who the person was !

You see during my classical training no one ever mentioned this author. And when I started reading about him I have to admit that I was very sceptical about some of his strategies.

But as I continued my research, I gradually got very curious. More so because the results documented in his clinical case studies were phenomenal. He was one of the top cancer doctors of his time.

The Advantage of Stage 1 Approaches.

We all know that damaged organs are on the borderline of the scope of homeopathic medicine and surgery. So you see what intrigued me about these approaches was the fact that you could expand the scope of homeopathy in supporting these conditions i.e. advanced pathologies such as Cancer, Liver failure, Congestive cardiac failure, Chronic renal disease etc.

And so gradually I got some more related books on Stage 1 approaches especially Organotherapy and started reading them. This led to more and more deeper research and I literally squeezed every source of information I could find on the subject.

Eventually I decided to apply them in some of my chosen cases where my well indicated remedies just did not work. I admit I used them usually as a last resort or in conjunction to my core remedies when they did not work. And I have been pleasantly surprised with the effects.
Today these are what I call the Stage 1 approaches in homoeopathy.

For me, one of the main reasons why well indicated remedies fail to work well in pathological cases is that the action of the rightly indicated homeopathic remedy is BLOCKED by a damaged organ. It is like an internal obstacle to cure. Plus there is a toxic overload over time. So unless you remove them surgically, repair them medically through organ remedies and reduce the toxicity it will stop your core remedies from working.
So in these specific conditions certain Stage 1 approaches work extremely well in the first phase to address this blocked state. It clear the blocks and cleans the system. This then boosts your chances of the patient responding well to the indicated remedy in the later stage dramatically.

Ladder of Remedies

So this time I actually want to take you through my understanding of Burnett's Ladder Plan approach. I will walk you through one of his cases. This is a classic example of what he calls the Ladder of Remedies Plan. If you are new to Stage 1, this can be very confronting but hope this gives you a glimpse of what Stage 1 homeopathy is all about.

Let me know what you think about this approach. And please put your inputs and experiences here below and I promise to read them all.

I remember reading the little Compton Burnett books and being horrified at his approach to female cases (we were hysterical apparently) but impressed by his results.
A timely reminder!

Thank you so much for sharing this, Shilpa. We indeed often forget about Stage 1. Also the reason behind his prescriptions you explained well. Thank you!

Would one now use such a low potency of Bacillinum?
It would be very hard now not to just play a supportive role to orthodox care, jean

I think it is a typo. It should be Bacillinum 30. From what I understand he generally used the nosodes in 30C whereas the organ remedies in low dilutions unless toxic. Thanks for pointing it out Jean.

Very interesting presentation, thank you!

Your input on the topic is, i admit revealing to me. I have to retrace my steps to learn more, and thank you for giving us an opportunity to think out of the box.

This is a nice interpretation.A long past case, this gives us lesson for a complicated case like this. Thanks Dr.Shilpa

Thank you Shilpa. A great presentation as always. I will forward to the students in Calgary!

Thank you Shilpa~ just love the way you share the variety of homeopathic approaches .......I have found one can get very excited trying out the different ways. What's amazing is how those low potencies worked in the Victorian times ,whereas they probably would not hold as well now .

May it please Sohani I'm intrigued as to why you feel those low potencies would not hold as well now.

Thanks Shilpa - very interesting. Thuja is for effects of smallpox vaccinations isn't it? which is maybe all that was around then. I wonder how frequent his repetition was, maybe daily. Thanks again

Thanks Shilpa, I enjoyed how he used organ clearing and support remedies along side the clearing of the miasms he precieves have been acting on her.
Simple really and effective.

Thank you, Shilpa. Fascinating...and most thought-provoking for me is his use of miasmatic nosodes when the patient has no major presenting complaints - as opposed to waiting at this point and letting the previous remedy "continue its action".

Compton treated many things that are often seen even by homeopaths as incurable. One of his topics that I found fascinating was the successful treatment of cataracts with homeopathy. How many homeopaths today treat cataracts, I wonder?

What was the remedy given for Cataracts by Compton?

Thank you so much for presenting this case of Compton Burnett's and your interpretation of his method. I have long loved Burnett but never quite understood what he was doing. You have renewed my interest in his works. I am so happy seeing the synthesis of different ways of homeopathic treatment that you have been presenting.

A stimulating topic -- we have to work with the different potencies,of the core medicine selected as we are are still prejudice in usage of potencies a study with this base could be helpful

This case is very enlightening. Thank you for sharing and for your interpretation. It does help to understand this approach with difficult cases.

Enjoyed this very much. I don't see why the dosage of Bacillinum couldn't be 3c as I have seen 6c is a common dosage and very effective and cancer patients require low dosages don't they due to their weakened state.

Thank you for sharing your interpretation of his process. It was always a puzzle to follow his process.

This was a very interesting case. I was intrigued by how he changed remedies.

Thank you Shilpa very interesting and inspiring case to solve in stage one step by step. This is like a lesson for us.Your experiences teaches us and inspire us regarding the treatment. Thanks for sharing these homeopathic approaches and cases of Compton Burnett. Thanks Shilpa.

Beautiful case. I watch it for a third time. Do you have any idea about the repetition of the remedies? Probably once a week for the zoic, but how about the organ remedies?

Thanks Boryana
I personally repeat the organ remedies more frequently depending on the pace and nature of the pathology.
Anywhere from once a day to multiple times a day. In cancer support, I use the plussing method by Dr Ramkrishnan where the dose is repeated multiple times in an hour.

Great discussion, validates the method of my practice using remedies to remove layers and eventually the true constitution of the patient is revealed.
Example: a child, age 6, damaged by antibiotics first week of life given a bowel nosode, then a remedy complimentary to the nosode, then her Nat mur personality emerged to clear the rest of the case.
Thank you for presenting Burnett's method.

A very interesting approach. It seems very logical to me. And a beautifully explained interpretation Shilpa, thank you for generously giving of your experience. I am very much enjoying learning with you.

IMPRESSING RESULT! Still I am a bit confused with his approach. I myself have a case of tumour of tongue in which I used Thuya ch6 repeated daily doses for the specific lesion, Carcinosinumch200 1 dose for family history of cancer and Carboneum sulphuricum ch 200 1x month that was the patient constitutional remedy with spectacular results.

Very interesting and knowledgeable

Very Informative. Thanks Dr.Shilpa

Shilpa this was a wonderful presentation and explanation on how Burnett prescribed homeopathic remedies. I was always fascinated by Burnett's methods and I have quite a few of his books which I cherish.
I discovered them while I was still studying homeopathy and I never understood why homeopaths did not use his methods since they worked so well. I am sure that some homeopaths do use them and there will be many more in the future.

Such great information on Burnett's approach. Peaks my curiosity to read more. wondering...what FRT stands for in organ support?

Thanks Suzanne. It is Female reproductive tract.
